General Apathy and General Outrage

Many frustrated Americans who are still looking for an alternative to Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are flocking to two veterans of US politics, whose influence may be greater than ever in the 2016 election—General Apathy and General Outrage. These two eminences have long been tactical allies, running together on the Include Me Out ticket, and it’s not easy to judge which of them has a stronger base of support in any given election cycle. However, there’s good indication that General Outrage has the upper hand this year, and both major party candidates will need to make strong appeals to the large bloc of voters who incline to Outrage. Since a substantial portion of the voting population holds a negative view of both Trump and Clinton, it’s unlikely that either campaign can count on convincing the remaining stalwarts of Apathy to switch to their candidate. Like it or not, swing voters are speaking the language of Outrage, and that is setting the tone and the agenda of the 2016 Presidential election.
